Understanding Coatings for Eyeglasses and Sunglasses

The world of lenses for eyeglasses and sunglasses is complicated if you do not understand what everything means. From lens types to coatings – there is a lot to know. Here is everything you need to know on understanding coatings for eyeglasses and sunglasses so you are able to choose the right ones for your needs.

The Different Types of Coatings

There are four main types of coatings which include anti-reflective coating, blue light protection, scratch-resistant coating, and UV protection. Each one performs different functions but all are good choices depending on your own needs.

Anti-Reflective Coating

Anti-reflective coating is an ideal choice for those who want to help eliminate the reflections or glare that is seen at night while wearing glasses without this type of coating. It also helps get rid of halos that are seen. This type of coating is also good at protecting the lenses from smudges and scratches and keeps water and dust away better than not having it. While some help cut down on ultraviolet light, all of them help to make your appearance better by making the eyes clearer and anti-reflective coating helps the wearer see more sharply.

Blue Light Protection

Blue light is caused by electronics such as Smartphones, computer screens, televisions, and tablets. This light causes eye strain and blue light protection coating helps prevent that. Much like the other coatings, it also helps protect your lenses from scratches and smudges. How it works is with anti-reflective properties and there are different brands of this coating like Sharper Image TechShield. This coating also looks very clear, which makes it an attractive choice that is virtually invisible to others.

Scratch-Resistant Coating

While this one sounds self-explanatory, scratch resistant coating works in a number of ways to prolong the life of your glasses. Not only does it help resist scratches but it is a good investment that keeps your eyeglasses like new for longer, which also improves your vision. No one wants to look through glasses that are scratched, which causes eye strain so this type of coating is a must-have for many eyeglass wearers.

UV Protection

UV or ultraviolet protection is a major component in protecting your eyes. Too much exposure to this type of light causes a myriad of eye problems including macular degeneration and even cataracts. Ultraviolet light comes from the sun and is a type of electromagnetic radiation. This kind of light is what causes sun damage like sunburns and skin cancer so it is imperative to protect your eyes from ultraviolet light.

What Should I Choose?

There isn’t a blanket answer to which one of the coatings to choose but fortunately, most eyeglasses that have coatings as an option allows you to choose one or more. So if you want to choose all four coatings, you can do so. Pick the one(s) that you works for what you need.

For instance, if you do not have a problem with night glare then you may not need anti-reflective coating. If you are not in the sun a lot then you may not need UV protection, although it is usually recommended. If you do not watch television or use a computer much, you may not need blue light protection although as technology advances, it is rare. As far as scratch resistant coating, this one is a good choice no matter what.

What About the Cost?

Any option you add to your eyeglasses is going to typically cost additional money but coatings are a good investment. For example, the scratch-resistant coating prolongs the life of your eyeglasses so that initial investment yields a better savings in the long run.
