5 Advantages of Adding Mirror Coating to Your Prescription Sunglasses

Sunglasses are as stylish as they are functional. Depending on the option you choose, you can wear them almost anywhere to add to your style while also protecting your eyes from the sun. But when you need to wear prescription sunglasses, you might not think that you can take care of many of the same style benefits. For instance, many sunglasses are naturally mirrored, increasing their style factor while also decreasing light exposure. On the other hand, many prescription glasses come with more plain lens options.

Fortunately, that doesn’t have to be the case. In fact, adding mirror coating can come with a number advantages that any wearer of prescription glasses will appreciate. More specifically, here are 5 advantages adding mirror coating to your prescription sunglasses can provide.

1) Reduce the Glare

Most of us know the sun’s glare as an annoying everyday occurrence. Whether you drive during evening hours or ski in the snow, the sun reflects off bright surfaces to seemingly increase in intensity and impede your vision. With a mirror coating, that issue is minimized.

That’s because this mirror style actually reduces the glare you can expect during an average day. Sun rays that reflect off other surfaces actually get reflected, rather than absorbed by the lens. As a result, they never make it to your eyes, and can inflict no damage.

This is crucial, especially because glare can actually be damaging to your retina. In addition, it can impede your visions during times when reaction is crucial. Without it, you will not only feel more comfortable, but also be safer.

2) Increase Your Brightness

Quick question: what’s the worst thing about wearing sunglasses? Their major advantage, blocking out some of the light to help you see better on bright and sunny days, also happens to be one of their biggest disadvantage. When you put them on, the world is in constant twilight.

That does not have to be the case, if you find the right lens and coating. Mirror coating is the perfect example. Because the light reflects rather than absorbs, you will actually be able to see the surrounding area better. Everything is just a bit brighter, significantly enhancing your field of vision.

The results of this effect, once again, are more than just cosmetic. Seeing better can be crucial when driving with the sun shining right at your vehicle. A dark field of vision can be dangerous, which is why mirror coating can help you in both form and function.

3) Mix and Match the Colors

Mirror coating comes in a variety of colors and styles, but the most common one is undoubtedly blue. In fact, most mirrored sunglasses without prescription lenses you can pick up at the local store are probably available only or mainly in this blue style.

Unfortunately, that also happens to be the single worst color you could get for your vision. Blue blocks out the most light of all available coating options, leading to similar problems as the ones mentioned above. In this way, prescription sunglasses with a mirror coating are actually more beneficial than standard mirrored glasses available over the counter.

That’s because you can mix and match colors and styles. Your regular prescription lenses might be brown, which is the best tint for seeing objects clearly. When you apply a blue mirror coating, it will be visible on the outside, but you will still see the brown. Put simply, this type of coating allows you to combine the best of both worlds.

4) Hide Your Eyes When Needed

Let’s talk some more about the benefit that is at once the most obvious and the most overlooked. When adding mirror coating to your prescription sunglasses, you prevent others from seeing your eyes. The mirror effect in this case is both effective and real.

Why does that matter? You might have functional benefits of hiding your eyes. For instance, those who like to play poker also tend to like the fact that no one else can see where their pupils are going at any given point in time. Of course, more likely than not, the benefits are closer connected to style.

Simply put, we all like our privacy. When sitting in the patio area of a restaurant or taking a walk, we might not want others to immediately see our eyes at all times. If that is the case for you, this type of coating is perfect for your needs.

5) Improve Resistance to Wear and Tear

Finally, in addition to all of the other advantages mention above, adding a coating to your prescription glasses also comes with a surprising durability aspect: it helps protect your eyewear from wear and tear that could otherwise lead to a replacement sooner than you want.

The reason for that feat is actually quite simple: you are adding an extra layer of protection to your actual prescription. Mirror coating tends to be manufactured specifically with durability in mind, helping to protect your lenses from scratches and other typical wear.

As a result, you can save significant money in the long run. A mirror coating typically doesn’t cost much to add to your glasses, but can add years to their life. You will have to replace them less often, as long as your prescription doesn’t change.

  1. Anna says:

Is it feasible to have a mirrored amber lens on everyday/every use glasses? My eyes are sensitive to light in general, but lately driving at night has become much more painful due to more people using the high-intensity bulbs for their vehicles. Would this be light enough, due to the amber tinting, to drive at night with?

  2. Larry says:

I just ordered my prescription sunglasses I should have them in the next couple days OK the company I got them through just don’t offer mirroring.
How much does it cost and how long does it take I got dark Gray glasses.
I ordered them for a trip I’m leaving December 8th for a month.

  3. Scott Repella says:

    • SanMartin says:

      Hi Scott,

You can not add mirror coating over the transition coating. AR and Mirror coating are different, the AR is a clear coating.

  4. Good Morning,
I just got beautiful Swarofski White prescription glasses, clear inside areas, then outside turns Grey, nice yes.
Though not dark enough when in the sun.
I’m thinking of changing to mirror coating, and cosmetically really pretty.

I was told of course you won’t see my eyes.
Thinking of seriously changing, I have 20 days to decide.
Clear is nice, though because white glass frame, and clear, a woman needs makeup.
Outside it does turn darker, very nice, though bright sunlight not protecting the eyes.
Your article is very informed, and thinking, what are your thoughts?
    Thank you,
